Stress-Free Homework

I’ve noticed that whenever I give homework to my students, some of them ended up not meeting my expectations. I thought that I thoroughly explained everything to them, but then again, I might not have. I read some tips to make homework stress-free. I guess this applies to lower elementary and high school, but I think in can be applied in college too…

1. Write it down. This really helps a lot. I remember one time I dictated an assignment and I just rolled my eyeballs when I saw what some of them has written.

2. Check for Understanding. I think the problem here is that, when you ask questions whether or not they understand what you are talking about, they would all say ‘yes’, even if they did not. They just want to end the topic and go home.

3. Make sure it is legible.I sure am writing legibly and still there are others who are hastily copying or reading something that ended up with the wrong answers, again.

4. Give Examples. What I noticed with this is that they follow it to the letter that when you try to eliminate verbatim and changes the thought but similar meaning, they would still get lost.

5. Have a Rationale.  What’s the main reason for giving homework?  To know if they understand it, but sometimes, it’s not effective, they just copy from classmates.

6. Assess it. The way I assess assignments are either giving them quizzes or oral recitation. You’ll know by then how much they learned, and who among them does not know what they are doing. Sometimes, lazy students just copy assignments from their classmates.

7. Give Sincere Praise. College days should be ruthless and gentle at the same time. And yes, I do praise.

Getting Things Done

do it - procrastination concept

This is how my life is going in the past couple of years:

  • I have several folders with must-do things that was never done.
  • I have bought books I wanted but never got to read.
  • I spent more time using the Internet than any other time supposedly doing more important things.
  • I have less and less time of productivity.
  • I have several chores that never get done.
  • I have other things I wanted to do but I never quite did it.

As a result of the pressure of things to do, I ended up not doing it. This fact is stressful that I wanted to finally change it. Then I bought a book on organization, I wasn’t thinking at all of reorganizing my stressful life (which became full of baggage simply because I procrastinate), but when I got to read the pages (I read that when my baby was hospitalized), I realized, there should be something to be done before I really fall flat to my face, at my own folly. So, here it is!

There are no shortcuts

to any place worth going.

- Beverly Sills, Opera Singer

Remembering this:

When you choose the behavior,

you choose the consequences.

My choice now is to be PRODUCTIVE. And creative. And just NIKE. I mean, DO IT.

Easter!

I was late (as always) in greeting friends this Easter. And as I was trying to forget my headache and keep up with my blogging it made me wonder about Easter…Here are what I discovered:

EASTER is the most important religious feast in the Christianliturgical year.[1] It is believed by the Christians to be the resurrection of Jesus, which Christians believe occurred on the third day after his crucifixion around AD33. Many non-religious cultural elements have become part of the holiday, and those aspects are often celebrated by many Christians.

Easter also refers to the season of the church year called Eastertide or the Easter Season. Traditionally the Easter Season lasted for the forty days from Easter Day until Ascension Day but now officially lasts for the fifty days until Pentecost. The first week of the Easter Season is known as Easter Week or the Octave of Easter.

Easter is termed a moveable feast because it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. Easter falls at some point between late March and late April each year (early April to early May in Eastern Christianity), following the cycle of the moon. After several centuries of disagreement, all churches accepted the computation of the Alexandrian Church (now the Coptic Church) that Easter is the first Sunday after the first fourteenth day of the moon (the Paschal Full Moon) that is on or after the ecclesiastical vernal equinox.

Easter is linked to the Jewish Passover not only for much of its symbolism but also for its position in the calendar. The Last Supper shared by Jesus and his disciples before his crucifixion is generally thought of as a Passover meal, based on the chronology in the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew 26:17; Mark 14:12; Luke 22:7). The Gospel of John, however, speaks of the Jewish elders not wanting to enter the hall of Pilate in order “that they might eat the Passover”, implying that the Passover meal had not yet occurred (John 18:28; John 19:14).[2] Thus, John places Christ’s death at the time of the slaughter of the Passover lamb, which would put the Last Supper slightly before Passover, on 14 Nisan of the Bible’s Hebrew calendar.[3] According to The Catholic Encyclopedia, “In fact, the Jewish feast was taken over into the Christian Easter celebration.” Source: Wikipedia

Now, what about the Easter Egg? Where exactly did the idea came from?

Ukrainian Easter eggs, or pysanky

The use of painted and decorated Easter eggs was first recorded in the 13th century. The church prohibited the eating of eggs during Holy Week, but chickens continued to lay eggs during that week, and the notion of specially identifying those as “Holy Week” eggs brought about their decoration. The egg itself became a symbol of the Resurrection. Just as Jesus rose from the tomb, the egg symbolizes new life emerging from the eggshell. In the Orthodox tradition, eggs are painted red to symbolize the blood Jesus shed on the cross. Source: Britannica

Now, we know where salted eggs (itlog na maalat) came from!

What Is Draining Your Resource Pool?

I’ve read an article in PioneerThinking that there are a lot of factors that drain ourselves. those extra unimportant things that kept us from our goals and making us unproductive. Here are some list of what commonly drains our energy.

Money

Spending too many hours in front of the Television
Car needs an oil change or other service/repair
Disorganized desk, office, home, garage
Clothing that is tattered or in need of update
Home décor that does not nurture your values/preferences
Negative people
Not being in a supportive relationship
Being in a relationship that needs to end
Working with people that result in you compromising your values
Lack of proper or needed office equipment
Overwhelmed with the mass of information that is bombarding you
Avoiding conflict or confrontation
Consistently stressful work leaving you exhausted/unsatisfied
Not enjoying your job
No personal interests that stimulate your mind
Having a health issue that you are not getting help with from a qualified professional
Not getting regular physical/dental check-ups
Partaking in food that is not good for you too often
Paying bills late
Paying taxes late
No plan for your financial future
Insufficient insurance coverage (life, home, auto etc)

===

Well, this is just some of the things that might drain our energy. Naturally, each one of us has different energy levels, and of course, different stresses. It’s up to us how we should make our own list…and yes, I’m now making my own.
